What to Do if You Have a Fungus in Your Nail

If you have a fungus in your nail, you will probably see a color and/or texture change in the nail versus what is normal for you. Normal nails are pinkish in color, regardless of your skin color. If your nail has white, pale yellow, dark yellow, brown or black spots or patches, you probably have a nail fungus.

Nail fungus can be quite stubborn to get rid of. Depending on how much of your nail is involved, you may want to try a home remedy, or consult your doctor.

Your doctor may prescribe an oral anti-fungal medication like Lamisil to be taken once daily for several weeks. A topical prescription like Penlac is put on the surface of the nail. Both are strong medicines and can be harsh, as well as produce unwanted side effects like headaches, nausea, or rashes. Prescriptions from your doctor end up being costly as well, if you do not have insurance. You will be waiting for your doctor and waiting in line to fill your prescription. You will also be waiting for it to work, as Lamisil and other similar treatments have only a 70% success rate, on average.

If you are interested in a homeopathic remedy, there are several things for you to try. Protect your feet with clean socks and well-fitting comfortable shoes (steel toes for construction workers!) since tight shoes and repeated trauma to your feet give opportunity to infection. Use flip-flops in public pool or shower areas. Do not share personal grooming tools with someone who has funky looking nails.
