The Community Arts Council Movement

The Community Arts Council Movement

$33.99

This book is an analysis of the movement's functions and activities. It presents the history of the movement as it has been captured and recorded by the first generation of people who have been involved. Second edition with a new Introduction. It has been twenty-five years from the first printing of The Community Arts Council Movement: History, Opinions and Issues. So, what has changed? What is similar? Reviewing recent summaries of anniversaries and activities, one is struck by the resonance of the original concerns and the progress made: recognizing and keeping community arts issues a priority on all levels-in these years, they have become central; enabling the partnership among federal, state and local partnerships to grow and flourish perhaps beyond all expectation; developing a voice for effective advocacy-we've come a long way. But like everything else we have experienced on these levels, there is always work ahead and the "now" changes as people come into and exit the picture. No one, and no one group, is really independent of the others in the support fabric. The Community Arts Council Movement is a history of the movement which traces its beginnings to models in the health and welfare fields. It presents the history of the movement as it has been captured and recorded from people who have been involved. Research for the book includes written materials from various councils; about 150 discussions with specialists and practitioners from urban councils and regional, county and rural organizations; and questionnaires completed by movement founders, community arts administrator trainers, and local and national political figures who have promoted community arts to their peers. "Thisbook should be required reading in order to understand the historical context of our own efforts as we map the future of the arts in our communities." - Peggy Spaeth, Director of Heights Arts "From arts administrators and arts educators, to government officials and interested citizens, this book has played a key role in illuminating the work of the nonprofit arts in America." - Robert L. Lynch, President and CEO, Americans for the Arts

Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood

Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood

$48.95

'Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood' explores the way that the UK's towns and cities are changing at the turn of the millennium. Previously known as 'Building the 21st Century Home', the second edition of this successful text describes the way that environmental and demographic change, economic pressures and the needs of community could change urban areas forever just as the garden city movement did a century ago. Some of the arguments that were so contentious ten years ago are now widely accepted. Others rumble on, particularly after another property crash that has hit urban apartments. The central point, however, remains; urban renaissance will not be achieved by coercion but by the creation of positive urban models. Through case studies, the book describes one such model, the Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood: mixed-use, mediumdensity urban development, designed to minimise resource use and maximise community. This classic text will be essential reading for urban designers, architects and planners, and anyone involved in the development of new homes and the regeneration of towns and cities. * Links social, environmental and economic factors with urban design for a fresh approach * Grounded in practical realities of development. Visionary, whilst also putting theory into practice * Provides a model for sustainable reform by showing how architects work with existing planning laws and environments to improve site plans

The School-to-Work Movement

The School-to-Work Movement

$122

The School-to-Work movement came together as a major national force for educational reform in the late 1980s and reached its peak in 1994 with the passage of the School-to-Work Opportunities Act. Throughout the 1990s, the movement had a substantial record of creativity and accomplishment. Among other things, it hastened the spread of career development activities for all students, strengthened ties between schools and local employers, and supported the creation of many innovative work-based education programs. By the end of the decade, however, the influence of the movement had begun to decline as other reform movements came to dominate the national educational landscape. The book documents the successes and failures of the STW movement during this dramatic decade and assesses the movement's prospects for the future. The book's chapters are written by the nation's top scholars in the STW field and focus on all aspects of the STW movement. Among the topics covered are STW implementation and participation, career academies, education and employment effects of STW participation, the role of STW programming in the new economy, the college for all movement, and STW pedagogy.

God at Work: The History and Promise of the Faith at Work Movement

God at Work: The History and Promise of the Faith at Work Movement

$29.99

"What was once taboo - faith at work - is increasingly accepted in corporate America. From secretaries to CEOs, growing numbers of businesspeople today want to bring their faith to work. Yet they wrestle with how to do this effectively and appropriately in a pluralistic corporate setting. For help they turn not to their clergy, but to their peers and to a burgeoning cottage industry on spirituality at work. They attend conferences and seminars, participate in Bible study and prayer groups, and read books, blogs, and eNewsletters. They see their faith as a resource for ethical guidance and to help find meaning and purpose in their work.> In God at Work, David W. Miller looks at how this Faith at Work movement developed and considers its potential value for business and society. Done well, the integration of faith and work has positive implications at the personal level, as well as for corporate ethics and the broader economic sphere. At the same time, increasing expressions of religion and spiritual practices at work also present the threat of divisiveness and discrimination.> Drawing on the insights of theological ethics as well as the sociology of religion, Miller analyzes the history of the modern day Faith at Work movement from its roots in the late 19th century to its modern formulation and trajectory. He examines the diversity of its members and modes of expression, and constructs a new framework for understanding, interpreting, and critiquing the movement and its future. Miller concludes that workers and professionals have a deep and lasting desire to live a holistic life, to integrate the claims of their faith with the demands of their work. He documents the surprising abdication of this field by church and theological academy and its embrace, ironically, by the management academy.> Offering compelling new evidence of the depth and breadth of spirituality at work, Miller concludes that faith at work is a bona fide social movement and here to stay. He establishes the importance of this movement, identifies the possibilities and problems, and points toward future research questions. God at Work is essential reading for business scholars and leaders, theologians and clergy, and anyone interested in the integration of faith and work."

Rajneesh Movement

Rajneesh Movement

$97.19

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Rajneesh movement is a term used by Hugh B. Urban and other commentators to refer collectively to persons inspired by the Indian mystic Osho (formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, 19311990), particularly initiated disciples, referred to as neosannyasins. These were formerly known as Rajneeshees or Orange People because of the orange and later red, maroon and pink clothes they used from 1970 until 1985. Members of the movement are sometimes called Oshoites in the Indian press. The movement was controversial in the 1970s and 1980s, due to its founders hostility to traditional values, first in India and later in the United States of America, particularly the state of Oregon where the movement had a large intentional community in the early 1980s. Verb Movement

Verb Movement

$86.03

Work on the movement of phrase categories, mostly Noun Phrases, has been a central element of syntactic theorizing almost since the earliest work on generative grammar. Work on the movement of lexical elements, heads, has been much less central until recent years. Verb movement is now, however, the center of current research in syntax. Parallel to the theoretical interest has been the attention focused on the description of verbsecond languages and on the movement operations that place the verb in its second position. This volume represents the latest work from many of the leading researchers in an important field, and draws on analyses from a wide range of languages. It will have a significant impact on its field. Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement

Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement

$6.16

"Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement "is the first comprehensive consideration of Chicano art in almost two decades and the largest exhibition of cutting-edge Chicano art ever presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Traditionally described as work created by Americans of Mexican descent, Chicano art first emerged during the vibrant Chicano rights movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. This catalog and exhibition explore the experimental tendencies within today's Chicano art, which is oriented less toward painting and polemical assertion and more toward conceptual art, performance, film, photography, and media-based art, as well as "stealthy" artistic interventions in urban spaces. Three essays by Rita Gonzalez, Howard N. Fox, and Chon A. Noriega explore the topic in depth. With more than two hundred color illustrations, twenty-five individual artist portfolios, and a wryly subversive chronology of significant moments in Chicano cultural history, "Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement "charts new territory and provides a conceptual sampling of Chicano art today.

Benjamin Elijah Mays, Schoolmaster of the Movement (Hardcover)

Benjamin Elijah Mays, Schoolmaster of the Movement (Hardcover)

$65.47

In this first full-length biography of Benjamin Mays (1894-1984), Randal Maurice Jelks chronicles the life of the man Martin Luther King Jr. called his "spiritual and intellectual father." Dean of the Howard University School of Religion, president of Morehouse College, and mentor to influential black leaders, Mays had a profound impact on the education of the leadership of the black church and of a generation of activists, policymakers, and educators. Jelks argues that Mays`s ability to connect the message of Christianity with the responsibility to challenge injustice prepared the black church for its pivotal role in the civil rights movement. From Mays`s humble origins in Epworth, South Carolina, through his doctoral education, his work with institutions such as the National Urban League, the NAACP, and the national YMCA movement, and his significant career in academia, Jelks creates a rich portrait of the man, the teacher, and the scholar. Benjamin Elijah Mays, Schoolmaster of the Movement is a powerful portrayal of one man`s faith, thought, and mentorship in bringing American apartheid to an end.

Urban Interventions: Personal Projects in Public Places

Urban Interventions: Personal Projects in Public Places

$53.17

Evolving from graffiti and street art, the next quantum leap in artistic work is now hitting public spaces. This is the first book to document the new movement as well as its interplay with art, architecture, performance, installation, and activism. Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban and rural landscapes, these mostly spatial interventions bring art to the masses. They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery. Modified traffic signs, swings at bus stops, and images created out of sand or snow challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. The work is an intelligent and critical commentary on the planning, use, and commercialization of public space. With a rich visual selection of projects and methods, Urban Interventions documents this new artistic approach to urban art that is currently making a profound mark on our contemporary visual language. The book shows the growing connections and interplay of this scene with art, architecture, performance, and installation. Propagators of urban intervention surprise and provoke with work in cities including New York and London, but also in countries such as China, Columbia, and Turkey. Everywhere the work appears it turns public spaces into individual experiences. Urban Interventions is the first book to document these very current, personal art projects in a comprehensive way.

Failure of the Movement?

Failure of the Movement?

$113.11

The aim of this work is to present the course of conflict between the government and farmers trade unions, formed in a social movement, in Poland in the 1990s. Framing is used as a methodological concept. Author analyzes ways, methods and strategies used by movement to align own frame to master frame. He explains major factors that influent the final decisions and process of transforming movement into a political party. Scholars usually deal with the successful movements, explain the reasons they succeed, look for their methods and strategies. Almost none write about failures whereas author decided to describe the movement that failed. Roberts Benford and David Snow, two academics that proposed the framing term, claim that failure might be caused by lack of resonant master frame. Anthony Oberschall claims that movement exchanges into new organizational form when it successes. Thesis presented in this work is the opposite. This is a failure when there is no resonant master frame, when movement as a social process cannot reframe the reality and starts to look for new opportunities. Movement fails when in its organizational form did not reach its goals. The Pangolin's Guide to Bio-Digital Movement in Architecture

The Pangolin's Guide to Bio-Digital Movement in Architecture

$11.74

From ongoing experiments with bio-generative software, this comic book graphically explores design and digital nature through forms and structures derived from plant simulations: e-trees, branches, leaves, and flowers. The third "Pangolin's Guide" illustrates works generated with Xfrog using biologically and environmentally derived information. It also considers ways to infuse botanic attributes into structures, STL models, hybridized technologies, and materials while keeping in mind performance goals such as shape-shifting aerodynamics, passive air filtration, and temperature and pollution control. The comic's drawings are rendered from the project's CAD files to visualize and hypothesize ways for "digitally growing"--simulating--bio-design and bio-evolved forms with sensors and actuators for hybridized urban structures. "The Pangolin's Guide to Bio-Digital Movement "follows the 2006 publication of "The Pangolin's Guide to Biomimetics & Digital Architecture," continuing that comic book's emphasis of the integration of nature, architecture, and design. The new edition presents ideas for developing bio-inspired technologies for tall urban structures while it develops ideas biomimetically sampled from movement in trees and plants along with observations from leaves, flowers, and seedpods. The comic book graphically suggests new forms of structural systems as well as new solutions of building skins and cladding. These new structures and the comic book are the work of Dennis Dollens, a professor of architecture in the Genetic Architectures and BioDigital master program at the Universitat International de Catalunya, Barcelona. The comic book is supported by an iPhone/iTouch app edition and is a companion to his recent book, "D-BA2: Digital-Botanic Architecture II."

How did a collection of neighborhood volunteer organizations come to influence the development of a major Canadian city? Few other North American cities have embraced the community league movement with the vigor of Edmonton. For eighty-seven years, tens of thousands of volunteers from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) have often acted as a counterweight to large private and institutional interests, shaping municipal development by providing a voice and a training ground for grassroots civic participation. In its wake, the EFCL has left a host of sports, cultural and civic initiatives for the improvement of Edmonton, and an important lesson on how to create community.

Chapter I contains a short description of Rhythm . Chapters II, III and IV contain all the material from which the lessons can be planned, together with the general and underlying principles necessary to its right use. Though these three chapters can be classed as practical, the teachers presentation of the work to children has been withheld until Chapter VI, since success in the teaching of Music and Movement depends primarily upon a thorough understand ing of principles as well as a careful knowledge of the material. Chapter IV on boys work has been specially made complete in itself, avoiding as far as possible too much reference to the rest of the book. Chapter V deals exclusively with Movement Design. Chapter VII shows one application of the work to the study of the piano. It could equally well be applied to any other musical Instrument, as it could to an art other than music. I wish to offer most grateful thanks and acknowledgement to Miss Emily Pike for a comprehensive technical revision of the utmost value, and warm appreciation of herunfailing support of the work from the beginning. Also to Mr T. O. Y. Davies for his courage and fine co-operation which made it possible to experiment in work with boys. And to the poet, Mr Trevor Blakemore, for invaluable help by suggestions and criticisms through every stage of this book. A. D. 1936, PREFACE This book has much to tell us about Movement, a thing which all are familiar with but few understand. Our bodies, when they are not resting or asleep, are incessantly moving in endless ways, and even when they are resting or asleep, interior movement of many kinds is going on. But how many of us can say what movement really is How many of us know that for every movement we make there is a right way and a wrong How many of us have realized that by moving in the wrong way we are constantly wasting our energies, irritating our nerves, disturbing our tempers, lowering our vitality, and interfering with the proper action of our minds How many of us have made the discovery that the movements of our bodies, when they move as nature intends them to do, and has constructed them for doing, are just as joyous and delightful and refreshing as they are irksome and irritating and fatiguing when unnaturally done The writer of this book has made that discovery. But she has done so

This first English edition, deftly translated by Robert Bononno, makes available to a broad audience Lefebvre's sophisticated insights into the urban dimensions of ???.

The Mastery of Movement

The Mastery of Movement

$42.9

Labans The Mastery of Movement on the Stage, first published in 1950, quickly came to be accepted as the standard work on his conception of human move ment. When he died, Laban was in the process of preparing a new edition of the book, and so for some time after his death it was out of print. That a second edition appeared was solely due to the efforts of Lisa Ullmann, who, better than any other person, was aware of the changes that Laban had intended to make. The rather broader treatment of the subject made advis able the change of title, for it was recognised that the book would appeal to all who seek to understand movement as a force in life.In this fourth edition Lisa Ullmann has taken the opportunity to make margin annotations to indicate the subject matter referred to in a particular section of the text, so that specified topics may be easily found. Kinetograms have been added to most of the examples in Chapters 2 and 3, as Laban originally intended, for the growing number of people who read and write movement notation. Lisa Ullmann has also compiled an Appendix on the the structure of effort, drawing largely on material from an unpublished book by Laban. The relationship between the inner motivation of movement and the outer functioning of the body is explored. Acting and dancing are shown as activities deeply concerned with mans urge to establish values and meanings. The student is introduced to basic principles underlying movement expres sion and experience and the numerous exercises are intended to challenge his or her intellectual, emotional and physical responses. The many descrip tions of movement scenes and minedances are designed to stimulate penetra tion into mans inner life from where movement and action originate. Kenzo Tange and the Metabolist Movement: Urban Utopias of Modern Japan

Kenzo Tange and the Metabolist Movement: Urban Utopias of Modern Japan

$54.45

Metabolism, the Japanese architectural avant-garde movement of the 1960s, profoundly influenced contemporary architecture and urbanism. This book focuses on the Metabolists' utopian concept of the city and investigates the design and political implications of their visionary planning in the postwar society. At the root of the group's urban utopias was a particular biotechical notion of the city as an organic process. It stood in opposition to the Modernist view of city design and led to such radical design concepts as marine civilization and artificial terrains, which embodied the metabolists' ideals of social change. Tracing the evolution of Metabolism from its inception at the 1960 World Design Conference to its spectacular swansong at the Osaka World Exposition in 1970, this book situates Metabolism in the context of Japan's mass urban reconstruction, economic miracle, and socio-political reorientation. This new study will interest architectural and urban historians, architects and all those interested in avant-garde design and Japanese architecture.

Finding Lost Space: Theories of Urban Design

Finding Lost Space: Theories of Urban Design

$77.42

The problem of "lost space," or the inadequate use of space, afflicts most urban centers today. The automobile, the effects of the Modern Movement in architectural design, urban-renewal and zoning policies, the dominance of private over public interests, as well as changes in land use in the inner city have resulted in the loss of values and meanings that were traditionally associated with urban open space. This text offers a comprehensive and systematic examination of the crisis of the contemporary city and the means by which this crisis can be addressed. Finding Lost Space traces leading urban spatial design theories that have emerged over the past eighty years: the principles of Sitte and Howard; the impact of and reactions to the Functionalist movement; and designs developed by Team 10, Robert Venturi, the Krier brothers, and Fumihiko Maki, to name a few. In addition to discussions of historic precedents, contemporary approaches to urban spatial design are explored. Detailed case studies of Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; Goteborg, Sweden; and the Byker area of Newcastle, England demonstrate the need for an integrated design approach--one that considers figure-ground, linkage, and place theories of urban spatial design. These theories and their individual strengths and weaknesses are defined and applied in the case studies, demonstrating how well they operate in different contexts. This text will prove invaluable for students and professionals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning. Finding Lost Space is going to be a primary text for the urban designers of the next generation. It is the first book in the field to absorb the lessons of the postmodern reaction, including the work of the Krier brothers and many others, and to integrate these into a coherent theory and set of design guidelines. Without polemics, Roger Trancik addresses the biggest issue in architecture and urbanism today: how can we regain in our shattered cities a public realm that is made of firmly shaped, coherently linked, humanly meaningful urban spaces? The question of what kind of city we are trying to have is an urgent one as the world continues its dramatic urbanisation. Urban Visions presumes that an understanding of our urban experience is a prerequisite for envisioning what the city could be. In assembling work by distinguished authors from different disciplines and countries, Urban Visions offers a patient examination of what urban experience is and of the city’s necessity, with explicit and implicit propositions about what it could be. The book is illustrated in full colour.

Symmetries and asymmetries have always played an important role in linguistic theorizing. From the early works on potentially universal properties of transformational processes, differences between rightward and leftward movement processes were noted and constituted a challenge to theories of conditions on transformations. The upward boundedness of extraposition rules vs. the successive cyclic character of question word movement, for example, remains a vexing problem. An idea which has gained considerable prominence in the most recent syntactic work, in particular Noam Chomsky's 'Minimalist Program' and Richard Kayne's 'Antisymmetry' proposal, is that rightward movement simply does not exist. This means, in essence, that what looks like an element that has been moved rightward is either base-generated in its surface position, or it is actually moved leftward but all its surrounding materials have been moved leftward even further. Clearly, these radical proposals have generated a large number of new analyses of the relevant phenomena, and they have fostered considerable controversy about the viability and desirability of this type of approach. The present volume brings together a representative group of articles discussing a variety of aspects of (apparent) rightward movement processes, including considerations having to do with parsing, and representing the various opposing lines of thought on this matter. Empirically, they cover a wide array of constructions (extraposition, scrambling, quantifier-floating, etc.) and languages ( American Sign Language, Bengali, Dutch, French, Frisian, German, Hindi, Japanese, Marathi, etc.).
