We were finishing up the night game drive on our second night in the Khwai River Valley. The sun was an orange-red ball sinking behind the Mopane woodland to the west. Like a fluid wave the Quelea rose into the twilight in a enormous flock of millions of birds darkening the sky in synchronized flight, circling the horizon in all directions. The sound and energy of the birds, in a transcendence that produced a single organism out of the millions of people today, was palpable and electrified the awesome evening breeze. That we have been all totally and simultaneously rendered awestruck and speechless, some brought to tears, bears testimony to the reality that untamed nature - appropriate, raw, gorgeous - nonetheless lies buried within, calling us all at some point property. If there is to be a defining minute for our minor journey into the African wilderness - our wildlife safari - that would have been it.
It is a land of beautiful magnificence and mystery, with incomparable pure assets.
It is also a land rife with poverty, human suffering, and unenlightened, brutal leadership.
But in Botswana, our minor group saw none of that (evidence of it does obviously exist, even so, in Zambia and Zimbabwe). It is uncomplicated for me to arrive into a part of the entire world for a handful of days and leave once more without having regard for a far more sincere picture of life there.
The most effective I can hope for is that my presence represents an choice; and that habitat and species destruction can be "unhealthy for business" and unprofitable. That there is a sensible possibility for at least a handful of inhabitants to reside and thrive where by just before there was no prospect.
And any heart opened with the majestic primacy of nature - like what was undeniably felt though encountering the Quelea at sunset - is one more bit of hope that it all won't perish by our very own arrogant foolishness.
