Movie Review - Fallen (1998), Part 2
In mid-point of the Fallen, it is clear that Azazel not only enjoys to kill but have "fun" while doing so as well. As a part of "his" (?) recreational plan, he makes Hobbes shoot a completely innocent high school math teacher and then enters Hobbes's home and kills his own brother. That is followed by a frame up in which Hobbes becomes the prime suspects in all the gruesome murders committed by Azazel.
Hobbes knows that, anything short of a final confrontation to the finish, this evil horror business will not be done and he is probably the only man to do it. The final sequence is yet another fiesta of shape-changing acrobatics but the ending is not what you were ready for and leaves its mark.
A good example of cross-genre film making. Gets a 7 out of 10, instead of an 8 or 9, because of the heavy scenes of talking-head exposition, "educating the audience" on the obligatory Bible chapter and verse which supposedly explain the nature of the evil Hobbes is facing. Every time a thriller needs to consult the Bible to make sense of what's going on, it loses a few notches on my scale of artistic integrity and excellence.
REALITY CHECK: Quick - how many police lieutenant are there in any major city in America today who speaks English with Sutherland's unapologetic British accent? If anything, they are probably speaking with a Spanish accent, si? How did Director Gregory Hoblit skip over such an obvious point like that?
AUDIENCE NOTE: James Gandolfini [Det. Lou] has owned the TONY SOPRANO role to such an extent that I cannot watch him in any other role anymore. Granted, this one was made before the SOPRANOS but still it is amazing how light-weight and inconsequential he looks. It is clear that SOPRANOS is the best thing that ever happened both to him and us, the lover of all good stories and performances.
