Super Bowl Xliii - It's the Steelers Against the Cardinals
In the NFC, the Arizona Cardinals and Kurt Warner defeated the Philadelphia Eagles and Donovan Mcnabb with a score of 32-25 and finally book their place to Tampa by winning the division championship crown. They will have to face the Pittsburgh Steelers led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who showed their superiority over the Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco with a final score of 23-14.
Here are some vital football facts that are interesting to recall come Super Bowl Day.
The Super Bowl final is a game of surprised finalists. But this match can draw in the crowds. People may want to check out the Cardinals or they may go to the more established franchise with the Steelers. The Cardinals are the first No. 4 seed to host an NFC Championship game and are seen to be the underdogs. The Steelers are a big franchise with so much history and are gunning for their sixth Super Bowl. Both are not known to be exceptional teams in running offenses and have average rushing yards totals. The teams do not have a long standing history of matches played against each other where in they can pick up pointers when it comes to offensive tactics and defenses that each team can anticipate to throw against each other.
Injuries shall also be a key factor between the two sides. The Cardinals have to monitor linebacker Travis LaBoy who aside from battling an ankle injury for almost a month, has picked up a biceps injury and his status is up for evaluation. Others in the Cardinal squad who are not 100 percent but are looking forward to the two week break to give their bodies the time to recover are defensive end Antonio Smith with a right knee injury, Anquan Boldin, who has a bad hamstring and punter Ben Graham who played last Sunday with a groin injury. For the Steelers, wide receiver Hines Ward sprained his right knee, Mewelde Moore has an ankle sprain and safety Ryan Clarke may have suffered a concussion.
When it comes to defenses, particularly blitzing, Cardinals QB Warner was the best quarterback in the league in escaping the blitz. He made 134 of 208 attempted passes for a total of 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns during blitz situations. He has the skill to throw the ball quickly and shows enormous courage when in the pocket while for his receivers to be free from their markers. The Steelers meanwhile do not have a quarterback who is exceptional at blitzes like Warner. Roethlisberger has compiled 95 of 180 for 1,158 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions against blitzes in the regular season. He even has 29 sacks in 209 dropbacks during the regular season.
As of Super Bowls of the past, the most interesting match up shall be against the quarterbacks. A team's success and demise shall depend on how they play. Warner for the Cardinals will be the experienced one but Roethlisberger shall have the opportunity to join the ranks of the top quarterbacks in history. Warner has stats of 8-2 playoff record, has 22 touchdowns at this time with 13 interceptions. Roethlisberger is 7-2, has already won a Super Bowl before and is going for his second.

Super Bad $10.99 Great American's 2009 release SUPER BAD rounds up a bunch of sides Don Covay cut in the early '70s, including selections from LPs and a bunch of stray tracks released during this era. Much of this music is so funky it's a bit rough--the rhythms don't hold, chords slip, the sound is skinny, recording is thin--but its appeal is its period vibe, right down to how he does a funky workout on Vanity Fare's "Hitchin' a Ride." Covay's considerable vocal skills are always evident, so much so that it's hard not to wish that he had a better set of songs or a bigger budget worthy of his talents, but there are enough good moments to make this a good sampler of this forgotten era. |

Football and Philosophy: Going Deep $18.79 Over the past forty years, football has surpassed baseball as America's favorite game. The game has become an institution of our national culture: the Super Bowl is regarded as an unofficial national holiday, and our annual Thanksgiving Day celebrations would be incomplete without it. The sport brings in massive amounts of revenue to high schools and both public and private universities as spectators enjoy a unique and celebratory social scene. Professional football teams across the country cultivate and foster a sense of community in urban areas. Surely a game this influential, with its hallowed traditions, treasured festivities, and clearly defined cultural presence, resonates far beyond recreational importance. Football and Philosophy: Going Deep, edited by Michael W. Austin, reveals how a sport followed by millions reflects our deeper values, beliefs, and priorities. Austin and other contributing writers bring unique perspectives to this thought-provoking collection of essays. Divided into "four quarters" of reflective writing, the book covers many topics frequently debated by football fans. Sharon Ryan asks "What's So Bad about Performance Enhancing Drugs?," while the book's editor argues for a playoff system in college football. Daniel Collins-Cavanaugh ponders whether the salary cap makes the NFL a fairer league, and Joshua Smith offers his own review of the instant replay. Football and Philosophy also forays into some time honored issues as it considers the philosophy of winning in light of the NFL's most legendary coach, Vince Lombardi, and contemplates the concepts of sportsmanship, virtue, friendship, and failure. While the book is unafraid to tackle serious topics, touching on ethics, religion, and the nature of reality itself, the collection is designed to be accessible for any interested reader and was written, first and foremost, for fans of the game. As Austin notes, football fans and philosophers definitely have one quality in common: they both love to argue. Football and Philosophy engages in the debates of both groups, illuminating how the fields are intertwined. So whether they love or hate the college bowl system or disagree on whether the NFL has an ego problem, readers of this book will undoubtedly find much to ponder about America's favorite game. |
