How to Choose the Right Gym
Congratulations on deciding to get fit! Apart from choosing your new runners and outfit, how do you select the best gym for your needs. We'll talk about location, cost, contracts, staff , classes and equipment. Depending on your level of fitness and experience, your needs might be very different to someone elses.
We are often lead to believe that the best gym for us will be the one that has just opened up on the corner and has a large area full of glitzy, shiny machines just waiting for us. When we go in to enquire, we are told that we will need to sign a full year's contract and give our credit card details. This contract will not be able to be cancelled for any reason.
When we look around the gym we notice that most of the clients are quite young and seem more interested in wearing their highly fashionable lycra gear together with their colour co-ordinated and matching ipods, wrist straps and head bands. We also take note of the fact that the receptionists are chatting to each other or are having private telephone conversations.
Obviously this is not the gym for us. The other end of the spectrum is the gym which has a reputation for body builders and really serious athletes. Sometimes these gyms do not seem to welcome ordinary people who just want to tone up and get fit and can appear daunting.
We should always be on the lookout for a gym which is owner operated and whose owner is actually working on the premises. This ensures that personal attention is available and that the staff will be there for you. The staff are the key members of the team at the gym.
It is is essential that a new member be greeted on entry, that the locker room is clean and that a locker key is given to the member.
A gym owner who looks to ongoing membership renewal of the members will ensure that funds are left in the business to provide for new equipment and restoration and upkeep of existing equipment and facilities. It is a sad looking gym that has cracked vinyl covers on the benches and weights that have not been freshly painted regularly.
I have made reference to the staff of the gym. A good gym will have staff who continue circulate around the gym and make sure that the members are using the equipment correctly.
One should not have to ask staff how to use a particular piece of equipment or how many sets of an exercise to do. This information should be provided freely and in good time before injury occurs to the uses of the equipment. After all, does it not make good commercial sense to avoid law suits from dissatisfied clients?
A good gym should offer a variety of classes in different activities. These should include circuit training, stretches, cardio burning and yoga. The gym should be user friendly regarding hours of opening and take into account that the busy executive will want to work out in the gym before and after they are at the office.
Personal trainers should be available to work with clients. They should be fully accredited and well motivated so that when a gym recommends a trainer to a client, a good working relationship can be made between the two of them. The gym manager or owner should also ensure that the client is happy with the service provided by the personal trainer. After all, this
service does not come cheaply and has been paid by the client as a extra cost on top of the membership fees.
Lastly, your chosen gym must make you feel good when you are there. By feeling good, I mean motivated to work out, happy to see other people doing the same and lastly knowing that a dedicated and trained gym staff will look after your every need.
