As an investor approaches retirement, it is recommended that a certain level of assets be shifted to cash and fixed income instruments. It seems reasonable to assume an individual would want to decrease the risk of losing valuable retirement funds so close to the finish line. An additional advantage over traditional CDs is that taxes will be deferred until withdrawal because of the tax treatment of qualified plans.
Bonds (5-6%)- This represents probably to safest way to invest in corporations. Bondholders claim the first right to assets if a company becomes insolvent so bonds are never completely worthless like stocks would be under similar circumstances. There is still a slight risk of loss so this demands a little research to determine a company with a stable financial position.
Fixed Annuity (5-6%)- A rollover into a fixed annuity product can be every bit as lucrative as a bond allocation. The only exception is that insurance company reserves protect the downside with a minimum guaranteed rate. If you want the return on bonds, let the insurance company do the bond research in exchange for the safety of a guaranteed contract and state protection of a certain level of assets. This is the only option available that can be directly converted to income distribution.
