Guess Shoes originated in 1987 as an off-shoot of the Guess Clothing Company, which was founded in 1981 by George and Maurice Marciano when they opened a clothing store in Beverly Hills, shortly after their arrival in Los Angeles. The brothers, who were born in Morocco and raised in Marseilles, France, were joined by brothers Armand and Paul the following year. Among the clothing sold in their new store were jeans designed by George Marciano and sold under the brand name 'Guess', because it was easy for the brothers, with their limited English to pronounce. George flew to New York in December 1981 and convinced Bloomingdale's to market his jeans on consignment. The first shipment of 30 pairs of jeans sold out within three hours.
Despite many ups and downs with their company Guess sales continued to grow, reaching $350 million in 1987, which induced the brothers to branch out into the women's market, kids-wear, leatherwear and footwear. Guess now makes shoes for men and women, complemented by a range of handbags and accessories. By 1994 Guess footwear sold more than $60 million. By the time the 2000s'came around Guess accessories and footwear was so popular the company began opening several Accessories boutiques in malls selling only accessories and shoes.
Guess men's footwear sales had reduced and were pulled from the range back in 2003. However they were relaunched in 2006 and by 2007 had began to increase steadily. The men's footwear line now offers more than 15 styles ranging from sandals to dress shoes.
