Fifty Years Of Doc Martens

It seems incredible to think just how humble the roots of Dr Martens are but, as a company who began distributing boots that seemed to solely appeal to the working classes, Dr Martens shoes are now worn by people of all backgrounds and beliefs and are reckoned to be one of the most reliable, trustworthy types of shoe in production. They haven't even changed the way they make them for the last half century.

Dr Martens has just celebrated its 50th birthday and it looks like the company is going from strength to strength, even today. At the beginning, it was a little slow, if even only for a while. Starting in the garage of a house in Munich, Germany, the inspired design for the famous Dr Martens shoe sole wound its way to England, where the creators of inspired, quality footwear eagerly set about combining the two to create one visionary shoe. The German doctor - Dr Maertens - and the family Griggs of England took a risk together to create a boot that was not just long-lasting, practical and hard-wearing, but was the epitome of comfort and designed in such a way that it would never go out of fashion. And it never has.

Once the boot started circulating amongst the working class thanks to its practical uses, which it did by the thousand, it wasn't long before people started to notice. In the 60s, skinheads adopted the boot as part of their subculture fashion and from there it moved on to represent the punk movement in the 70s. After that, it became a staple of many cultures and peoples from various decades: Mods, ska, Goth, hardcore, nu-metal, straight-edge, Britpop - the list goes on and on and, even as the UK social music scene continues to warp and change as the years go by, one thing always seems to stay the same - everybody wears Dr Martens.

Dr Martens itself could not have anticipated the country-wide embrace that flew towards its shoes. Everybody that felt they had a statement to make, an individuality to express, a uniqueness to be beheld picked up a pair of Dr Martens and half the job was done for them. Now, with women's and mens shoes available in more than 250 different styles, Dr Martens is still the ideal way to express yourself, even 50 years later. Thanks to the original style and practicality of the boots, it looks as if they'll be around for many more years to come.
