Men's Clothes for Spring 2011
Spring is the time of rebirth, when the planet heaves itself out of the winter doldrums and puts on a show of sprouting plant and animal life, and even with occasional bursts of warmth and sunshine. In the spirit of rebirth, then, spring is also a time to shed your winter coat and step daringly into a new wardrobe, while looking ahead to the halcyon days of summer.
Leading the change into warmer weather this spring is the clever ‘Shacket' which, as you may have guessed, is the midway point between a shirt and a jacket. In the style of a shirt, but with heaviness and detailing you'd usually associate with a jacket, ‘Shackets' range from the in-vogue khaki military style to the classic denim, and for those with a penchant for the ‘Miami Vice' look, striped seersucker.
The bulkiness of a Shacket needs to be paired with a more form-fitting look on the lower half, but that doesn't mean you have to recycle the same skinny jeans you've been wearing since last autumn. Skinny chinos and trousers hit the mark perfectly, and you can either stick with the traditional skinny ‘carrot' style, or push the boat out and go for a touch of the high fashion jodhpur look, with an ‘arc' leg. Moving even further south, for this look you can't go wrong with a pair of brogues between you and the ground.
If spring really heats up then you may even find yourself searching the bottom of the wardrobe for a pair of shorts. If you find your attire sadly lacking in short-trouser options then don't despair, this season you'll find city shorts aplenty – tailored cotton shorts cut to sit an inch or two above the knees, ideally matched with a pair of plimsolls or boat shoes.
While previous seasons have been dedicated to rock n' roll and rebellion, as witnessed by the return of the gritty ‘80s and grungy ‘90s looks, this season will be characterised by a return to a more wholesome and preppy style, as evidenced by the return of the letterman jacket, for that 1950s American football player look. In terms of colours for t-shirts, shirts, shorts and chinos this spring, minimalism will reign, with a move away from dark colours and neon towards lighter pastels and soft sherbets.
Meanwhile, the interplay between popular culture and fashion will be seen once again as hit TV series such as ‘Mad Men' and ‘Boardwalk Empire' influence the world of men's clothes are moving towards a more classic, tailored, structured look – it's a safe bet that a sharp-looking suit will no longer be just for the office. Then again, you still can't go wrong with either a button-down plaid or check shirt, paired with slim cut or skinny denim jeans.
Whatever you wear this spring, if you think sharp, structured and suave, then you'll never miss the mark.
