These bracelets often had carvings of different types of animals such as lions or snakes which had different meanings that tie into their culture. Men often wore thick metal or leather wrist bands to protect them in the event of a battle and also used them as decoration for their ceremonial dress.
The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful dynasties that swept across the world during that time and they were also known for their keen sense of fashion. One of the ways the Romans used to wear their bracelets was carving a design into the wristband and strategically placing gems in the eye of the tiger or lion or whatever the animal might be, showing their wealth and power to all who see it. Whether it be in the Roman, Greek, or any other empire, most were used for fighting in battle. They would add spikes or studs as a form of weaponry or protection against their opponents. This trend carries over into today's trends as well. You will see different types of styles that tend to sport this look more than others such as Gothic or Punk trends. Many of today's fighters like the MMA or UFC wear these wristbands because it dates back to the earliest fighter in our history and simply because its a trendy yet very masculine type of accessory.
