Mens Shoe Size 12 Is Not As Big As You Think!
Shoeless Joe Jackson got his nickname because he once played an innings in bare feet because his new footwear blistered his feet.
His normal daytime shoes, mens shoes size 12, were perfectly comfortable but Joe's job was professional baseball and he once found his new footwear so uncomfortable he continued his game bare footed.
A professional baseball player in the first two decades of the 20th Century, Joe played for Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago in an illustrious career spanning a dozen years or so.
The U.S.A. has its own agenda in sport – baseball and their version of football, pads for protection and helmets as well, produce world champions when virtually no other country plays their two games. Japan challenge in baseball, no one challenges in their version of football.
Joe's fame in a game that few who have no been brought up in the game can understand has been reinforced by Hollywood films – the field of dreams in the USA is a baseball pitch, in Europe the field is replaced by the word Theatre, the Theatre of Dreams being the home of one of the most famous soccer teams in the World, Manchester United.
Joe was happy to relieve the pain his new shoes were giving him, modern soccer players, playing now in high tech lightweight boots find comfort in their footwear, but the old solid leather boot of a couple of decades ago was also protection!
Footballers have always had metatarsels, its just the lightweight boots of recent times that have exposed those mets. to the strong tackle and injury.
Men have tended to look at shoes fairly conservatively. After all, a brown suit needs brown shoes, a black one black! The range of colours required is fairly limited. There has been no compromise on quality however, and demand for hand made fashion and comfort remains.
In Joe's day, shoes were seen as a necessity in American life, for comfort and warmth in the cold winters experienced in many of the huge conurbations of North America. His career preceded the Depression Years of the Thirties when shoes became less important as food on the table was the urgent requirement day after day.
Employment was the key, and many men, waited outside factory gates hoping a foreman would give them a day's work to allow them to but food on the table. Shoes were well used – they walked many a mile in search of that work, in the harshest of winters sometimes.
The Depression hit many rich families, many of whose heads had previously been the fashion conscious suited class, hand made shoes and automobiles a norm. Problems came and when those hand made shoes wore out, they could not be replaced!
Welfare was available in the USA at that time but many proud men found it extremely difficult to queue to collect assistance in an impersonal environment. It was alien to their physique, the whole American dream concept and left an indelible mark on those who felt humiliated by the experience.
Prosperity of course returned, and with that prosperity, the demand for quality clothes and footwear! By their nature, men are more conservative dressers but they may still own several pairs of shoes, same colour and design at times, with comfort being a priority.
