The thick working boot was popular with the working classes but the privileged upper classes who still rode horses preferred boots with thigh high uppers to prevent chafing of the calves and upper thighs. During the Napoleonic wars Wellington saw how soldiers were impeded by thick mud, and ordered supplies of the Wellington boot, also known as the gum boot. Made of rubber, it was said to be largely responsible for the defeat of the French at Waterloo.

For much of the twentieth century people were preoccupied in fighting two world wars. Army boots were made of thick canvas or leather, and they had thick rubber soles. Sports footwear took its cue from army kit. Rugby boots had thick leather uppers which laced up above the ankle. Metal studs were stuck into the bottoms of boots to give traction. Long distance races were run in canvas shoes with rubber soles. They did little to protect the feet from jarring or chafing, and often lost their shape in the course of an event.

The post modern era, after the World Wars, saw the advent of the Beatniks who made their own shoes following any unconventional design. More conventional men often wore soft leather shoes which were known as brothel creepers. At this time sport science began to evelve and shoes were designed to protect feet from jarring and chafing, whilst optimizing performance.

Lighter shoes were made from materials that allow for air circulation. They were designed to support the feet and ankles and prevent excessive jarring.
