The company was initially founded in 1964 by Phil Knight. At that time the company was called Blue Ribbon Sports and later had its name changed. One of the features of the early Nikes was that their soles were made with bags of pressurized gas in them. These bags would compress when impact took place then quickly expand back to regular size. A former aerospace engineer helped the company come up with that feature.

In the early 1980's Michael Jordan was signed to a contract to endorse the company. He was, at that time, early in his NBA career and was just beginning to take hold of the league and of his marketing potential. The Air Jordan line came out as his signature model in the next year.

Michael's Air Jordan line brought the basketball spotlight to the company. The shoes were not allowed to be worn during a game because they did not meet the league dress code at that time. Even though he was warned of this Michael still wore the shoes and received fines for each time he did. The fines worked as an advertisement for Nike and Michael because it consistently put the Air Jordan's in the news for everyone to see.

After winning the slam dunk contest in 1986 Michael became more involved in the designing of the Air Jordan line. The line started being made with lighter materials and instead of a full high top were made into a three-quarter cut shoe. Since they were endorsed by one of the biggest stars in the game and were made in non-conventional ways the sales for the Air Jordan line were better than ever. The personal touch really helped add different touches to the line as it was an expression of Michael's thoughts at the design time.

After the Air Jordan line exhibited such great success many other NBA players also decided to endorse the company's products. This led to Vince Carter, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James all taking a part in the business. Many of these players also decided to lend a hand in designing their line so it would match their thoughts of what the line should look like.
