The Corn Palace
I have found my thoughts turning to popcorn and corn a lot lately. In my musings I was reminded of a building that is located only an hour away from where I grew up on the plains of South Dakota. This amazing building is decorated on the outside with corn, other grains and prairie grasses. The Corn Palace is located in Mitchell, South Dakota and has been in existence in various forms for over 100 years. In 1892 the small community of Mitchell decided to build a corn palace to show the world that South Dakota had a healthy agricultural climate. In 1905 a new palace was built, but a few years later it was decided that the third and present building should be constructed out of steel and concrete to make it permanent. It was completed in 1921. The building is not just a tourist attraction. It is used for trade shows, stage shows, meetings, banquets, graduations of the local high school and university, and many basketball games.
Each year the building is redecorated with corn murals based on a theme chosen by the Corn Palace Festival Committee. At present they use 13 colors or shades of corn: red, brown, black, blue, white, orange, calico, yellow, and green. In creating the murals, whole ears of corn are nailed or stapled to the outside wall with the various shades of the corn and other grains creating a mural depicting various scenes all around the building. This year's theme is "Through the Ages" and the murals depict various modes of transportation such as an airplane, sailboats, a bicycle, a hot air balloon or a train. And it is all done primarily with ears of corn.
We use corn for multiple uses. Besides building murals, we make plastic out of it, starch our shirts with it, feed animals and people and even snack on a special type of corn or maize, called popcorn. Popcorn has become one of the most popular snack foods in the country. In fact, I'm sure you will find popcorn at many events taking place inside the Corn Palace. It started becoming popular at about the same time the Corn Palace was becoming popular back in the 1930's. Today, we can get popcorn in many flavors and in many locations, whether it be a sporting event, at the grocery store, movie theater or made in our homes. Theater style popcorn is a favorite. You can make it at home with a popcorn machine. There are a variety of styles and prices available. I invite you to learn more about popcorn and popcorn machines at my website.
We offer theater style popcorn machines in a variety of sizes and styles. We also provide all the supplies and accessories that you need to have great tasting popcorn in your home, school, church or place of business. http://www.marqueepopcornmachines.com

Handbook of Maize $199 Maize is one of the world's highest value crops, with a multi billion dollar annual contribution to agriculture. The great adaptability and high yields available for maize as a food, feed and forage crop have led to its current production on over 140 million hectares worldwide, with acreage continuing to grow at the expense of other crops. In terms of tons of cereal grain produced worldwide, maize has been number one for many years. Moreover, maize is expanding its contribution to non-food uses, including as a major source of ethanol as a fuel additive or fuel alternative in the US. In addition, maize has been at the center of the transgenic plant controversy, serving as the first food crop with released transgenic varieties. By 2008, maize will have its genome sequence released, providing the sequence of the first average-size plant genome (the four plant genomes that are now sequenced come from unusually tiny genomes) and of the most complex genome sequenced from any organism.Beyond its major agricultural and economic contributions, maize has been a model species for genetics since it was the first plant to have a genetic map, initially published by Emerson and colleagues in 1935. Such central genetic phenomena as telomeres, nucleolar organizers, transposable elements and epigenetic gene regulation were all discovered first in maize, and later found to be universal eukaryotic genome properties. These central genetic contributions continue, including the characterization of the structure and evolution of complex plant genomes. Among plant science researchers, maize has the second largest and most productive research community, trailing only the Arabidopsis community in scale and significance. At the applied research and commercial improvement levels, maize has no peers in agriculture, and consists of thousands of contributors worthwhile. A comprehensive book on the biology of maize has not been published. In 1999, Peterson and Bianchi published "Maize Genetics and Breeding in the 20th Century", a highly personal account of the last hundred years of maize genetics. In 1968 and 1996, two editions of "The Mutants of Maize" were published, and these have been landmark books showing and briefly describing the contemporary genetic and molecular status of the maize mutant collection, a collection unsurpassed for any other organism, animal or plant. In the last seven years, there has been no publication targeting maize genetics, genomics or overall biology. Hence, a modern and comprehensive volume on the status (and future) of maize as a species for biological study is highly warranted. "Handbook of Maize: Its Biology" centers on the past, present and future of maize as a model for plant science research and crop improvement. The book includes brief, focused chapters from the foremost maize experts and features a succinct collection of informative images representing the maize germplasm collection. |
