Greatest Tips on Duck Hunting
Use flexible decoys – one of the biggest mistakes that most duck hunters do is set their decoys tight. Ducks normally sit tight in the water when they sense there is some danger and often get frightened quite easily. On the other hand, ducks that are relaxed usually stay in groups, mainly in the early periods of the season. It's recommended that you keep the decoys 3 feet apart and 12 feet between the each group early in the duck hunting period.
Avoid over-choking – make sure that you prepare your gun early enough with the same shells that you will use even on the next duck hunting period. To prepare your gun, just fire shots on a piece of cardboard with a diameter of at least 30 inches put at a distance of about 40 yards. I was amazed last season how tight my custom choke was firing, so I opted for a more enhanced cylinder.
Fire down that duck – when you shoot a duck but still has its head up swimming through the water; give it another shot even if you have a dog with you. It can be difficult for a dog or even the hunter to get to a crippled duck in the water. Quite often a duck that has been crippled will go underwater and get itself a piece of weed and this will make it difficult for the dog and the hunter to get it. You don't want to loose a duck you have been struggling to catch.
Use good shotgun shells – most often, hunter will take fault to their steel shot while the problem is using a light load in a shot. If you are hunting down small ducks such as teal, steel shots 1 1/8 oz to 1 ¼ of number 3s or 4s will be more suitable. If you are aiming for the bigger prey like the mallards using 1 ¼ oz steel to 1 3/8 oz of number 1s or 2s will work pretty well. You'll get more catches if you use the right kind of shells in your duck hunting activity.
Keep your hands and head covered – there is no point of purchasing a cool camouflage gear and boots if you won't cover your hands and face. If you don't keep your hands and face covered, then the ducks will easily see your movements and will free away. It's always good to cover your head with a net and gloves to your hands.
Landing within short-gun range – once you have lured you target hunt to your decoy spread, consider where you they will land. Ducks will either free away after circling several times or land away from your short-gun range if you don't have a suitable landing ground. Always ensure that there is sufficient landing within your decoy spread where the duck will land without landing on other traps.
Avoiding over-calling – it is strongly advised to avoid over-calling especially when you got the ducks to do what you wanted them to. If you go on calling even when it is absolutely no need to, the ducks will locate where the noise is coming from, and this may cause them to free away. The less noise you make the better.
Keep your dog calm – while it is important for the hunter to avoid unnecessary movements, it is also vital to keep your do under control. You need to train your dog to stay calm especially when your decoys are set for the duck hunting. You can tie your dog down if it risks scaring the ducks away from the decoys.
Keep your gun tidy – you will have a hard time in taking shots in duck hunting if your gun is jamming. You can easily lose your ducks if your gun is failing you. Consider using compressed air to clean your gun. Another option that works pretty well is the carburetors cleaner especially when you have completely disabled it. Just grasp the receiver avoiding the barrel and bolt on its head over a trash bin and spray away the dirt. Take care not to get this agent on a camo finish. In addition, while duck hunting in cold temperatures, use a very light oil to clean but don't carry too far.
Wear enough to keep warm – apparently, the most suitable moments to hunt ducks is when the weather is most horrible. By wearing in layers will enable you to walk out to your hunting ground without sweating. You can then put in an extra layer when you are done with setting out your decoys. In other words, you can not be able to hunt for long when you are shivering in your boots. It's always recommended to keep extra gloves, spare skullcap, and some hand warmers in your hunting bag.
