There is nothing more stirring than the sound of a scottish piper and the skirl of the highland bagpipes. Arriving at a somber looking building, possibly a church or town hall on a grey day can really be enlivened by a good piper, playing a well-tuned instrument in a smart brightly coloured highland piper's uniform. All of a sudden everyone knows they're in the right place for the wedding or whatever the occasion is and can relax and enjoy the unique sound.

There are 2 choices of uniform for a wedding piper.

The number one wedding piper uniform is made up of the kilt (which can be a large variey of tartans and sometimes the piper will be able to offer you a selection), tunic (usually black with bright buttons and silver embroidery), sporran (this is the long sporran made of horse hair which should meet the bottom of the kilt), spats (which are the white pieces between the socks and the shoes) and diced hose (tartan socks), full plaid (the tartan that is wrapped round the chest and shoulder area of the  with a brooch and a glengarry or feather bonnet.  This is the ultimate eye-catcher which can always be guaranteed to create a great impression for wedding guests and spectators alike. You may of course feel that this is too much for a small gathering where the piper in such a bright uniform would steal the show. In this case the number 2 uniform could be considered as it is far more understated.

The Number Two wedding bagpiper uniform whilst not as flamboyant as the number one, is still very smart looking and is what a competing piper would wear and is usually referred to as "day wear". This uniform comprises a kilt (again there are vast numbers of colours and petterns to be chosen from), but this time is accompanied by an Argyll jacket which is more akin to suit jacket but shorter in length, shirt and tie, ghillie brogues (which are the black brogues with the longer laces worn round the ankles) and a horsehair day sporran. The hat would usually be a glengarry and in fact this can be worn with the number 1 uniform to bring the overall impact down a shade or two.

Whatever choice of uniform you make, the piper should look smart and as though some effort has been put into wearing it.
