Off the Beaten Path in the Hill Country
Whether you live or visit the Hill Country, there are an endless variety of options for outdoor entertainment. You are likely already aware, in fact, of the popularity of tubing in the many rivers and streams of the area. Perhaps you enjoy the biking culture, whether mountain or on-road, as well as the variety that involves a Harley and motorcycle boots. While these activities are guaranteed fun, one of the things that sets the Hill Country apart is how off-beat we are off the beaten path.
Visit any area with waterways and you'll likely find boating tours, from water-and-land Aqua Duck rides to kayak tours. While you can find both of these in the Hill Country, for a different experience, try the Vanishing Texas River Cruise. With a focus on nature, the cruise takes participants on a tour of Lake Buchanan and the Colorado River. But while most people associate a boat tour with the warmer months, this tour shines during the winter. What sets this tour apart is your rare opportunity to see Bald Eagles in the wild. Approximately twenty-five bald eagles call the area home during the winter months. For an added bonus, choose the Freedom Flight Cruise which includes an informational tour with injured bird rescuers from the Bird of Prey Conservancy, the opportunity to witness the release of a rehabilitated bird back into the wild and up-close observation of birds of prey like owls, hawks and eagles.
You can go no farther off the beaten path than below ground. The Hill Country is home to a number of caves, offering both safe and well-lit tours for novices, as well as more challenging caves for experienced spelunkers. For a guided tour, visit the Longhorn Caverns in Burnet County. Naturally developed by an underground river, the caves have alternately been a site for Comanche Indians, a Confederate stronghold, and even a rumored hideout for the infamous outlaw Sam Bass. The site offers regular guided tours, as well as off-beat events like a midnight Paranormal Tour. For the more adventurous, visit the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area to tour cave path inside the infamous large granite dome. Though not overly challenging, visitors will encounter complete darkness, vertical surfaces and possible drops. Be certain to tour the cave with appropriate equipment, as well as provide a tour plan to another person outside the cave.
If being above ground is more your thing, try going way, way above ground on a zipline tour. Zipline tours allow individuals to soar over the Hill Country property via a harness attached to a cable stretching between high vantage points. As you travel between these points, you can view the beauty of the Hill Country from above, giving you the advantage of an unimpeded view of its rolling hills and abundant nature. At Wimberley Zipline Adventures, choose from eight different zipline lengths of 150 feet to 900 feet, suspended 100 feet in the air.
And though autumn is still far away, plan now for a winery visit in the fall. Not only can you, as usual, enjoy the gorgeous grounds and sample amazing wines, you can channel your inner Lucy at one of the post-harvest wine stomps. In addition to live music, and other events, participants can celebrate the harvest by helping to mash a few grapes the old fashioned way. Bring your bare feet, love of wine, and a willingness to play.
