Kenya Tours By Charter Flights Into Kenyan National Parks & Game Reserves
Kenya Tours can be done by road or by air but due to the poor road infrastructure and insecurity on some roads air transport is the safest means to use. There are several national parks and game reserves all over Kenya in Nyanza, Western, Central, Eastern, Coast, Rift Valley, Nairobi and North Eastern provinces. Tour to Kenya can be arranged through a travel or tour agent who has best rates for accommodation which are packaged to be able to be affordable to the tourists and categorized in differently depending with ones budget. We have upper market and budget hotels, lodges, tented camps as well as transport which ranges from Tour Vans,Landcruisers,Land Rovers which the tourists can choose from. There are also exclusive properties where everything is packaged in the prices including champagne, cold and hot drinks and their prices are at premium and they accommodate up to 60 people only for example Shompole,Bateleur camp, mara explorer,Saruni,,Loisaba,Kitich,Tassia among many others but just to mention a few. Most of the hotel chains have partnered with travel and tour agents and air charter operators to come up with all-inclusive flying and road packages to the national parks, game reserves and major cities in Kenya.
Due to different tastes of the consumers through research the air operators have differentiated their charter services to be able to serve the tourists better from the upper market to the budget traveler. Aircrafts range from single engine, twin engine, pressurized and services offered are, Private executive jet ,VIP executive, Business executive, Corporate executive, private charter ,scenic, aerial survey & photography, sight seeing, filming flights and you will make your own choice .Remember that for Private Jet flights it will depend with the airstrip in the national park, game reserve or the city you will be flying into, so before thinking of using the above service contact the charter company to ascertain whether a jet can land there.
Most of the airports and airstrips in Kenya opens at 0630 hrs and closes at 1830 hrs due to luck of runway lights, fire fighters and security at night. It is only Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Moi International, Eldoret International that operate 24 hrs while Wilson Airport, Malindi Airport, Kisumu Airport opens at 0630 hrs and closes at 2030 hrs.It is important the tourists have all this information due to planning and also if they are connecting international flights as they may miss connection and this results into penalties or having to stay longer spending unnecessary on accommodation, meals while waiting for their next flight. The advantage of using private charters is it is at your discretion to decide on timings and you can switch depending on your schedule opposed to fixed timetable on scheduled flights which you have to adhere to and be waitlisted on the next flight available thus inconveniencing you. There some national parks, game reserves and cities that do not have scheduled service at all thus the need for hiring a private charter or helicopter. It is important when traveling research on the information on accommodation and transport and make arrangements in advance other than coming to Kenya and be disappointed as you will have to find your budget does not meet hiring a private flight whereas there is no commercial flights to the destination of choice and also the accommodation is for upper market. Also note during Mid June to October every year if you are visiting Kenya you have to make your transport and accommodation in advance of at least 3 month as it is the migration period in the mara for wild beasts. Travelers make their reservations 6 month in advance and pay for and during this time the prices are high and if you travel from April to June every year the prices will be cheap as it is low season. During November to Mid December you can get reasonable prices and you can find accommodation in most of the cities, national parks and game reserves. During Christmas festival most of the hotels are fully booked in Mombasa, Diani, Malindi, Lamu, Nairobi, Eldoret, Kisumu, for any reservations it has to be made in October latest.
There is lot to be seen in terms of mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, flowers, trees and amphibians which we will briefly describe on each as follows,
BIRDS
Common Ostrich. The largest bird in the world standing 2-2.5m in height, and weighing up to 130 kilograms, which makes this flightless species almost impossible to misidentify. The adult male (A) has black and white plumage, the white being restricted to the tail and the tips of the stunted wings. The head, neck and thighs are pink. The plumage of the female (B) is a mixture of greys and browns with the head, neck, and legs dull grey-brown. The Somali Ostrich (struthio camelus molybdophanes)(C) , a sub-species, also occurs and is found in parts of Ethiopia ,Somalia and Kenya. The male differs in appearance in having blue-grey neck and thighs and a red stripe on the front of the lower leg. They prefer areas of short grass plains and dry semi-desert bush and scrub. During the breeding season several females may lay in the same nest and 70+ eggs have been recorded. It is only possible for the incubating bird, usually the ‘major hen', to cover around 20 eggs so in circumstances of larger clutches many go to waste. The incubation period is 45days and after hatching chicks from many different broods may join together into a crèche.A ‘major pair ‘often undertakes the raising and protection of the chicks, which continues for around 9 month, with other adults in loose association.
Great White Pelican
Recognizable when at rest or on water by their almost completely white plumage which often has a fush of pink during the breeding season. In flight the black primary and secondary wing feathers are prominent. The large bill is grayish –yellow and the pouch yellow to pinkish –white. Immature birds are grayish-brown becoming whiter with age. The legs and feet are orange-pink. The eyes are dark brown and surrounded by a patch of unfeathered pink skin. A very gregarious bird normally fishing in groups on freshwater and alkaline lakes.
MAMMALS
Cheetah. The worlds fastest land mammal, built for sheer speed. The body is sleek and flexible, with a powerful chest and very long legs. The coat is yellow/buff, randomly marked with small black spots; the chest and underside are almost white. The small, rounded head has small ears, large, deep orange eyes, black spotting on the forehead and cheeks and prominent black stripes extending from the inner corners of the eyes to the mouth. The tail is long, yellow/buff spotted with black for much of its length, but terminating with a series of black rings and a white tip. Each individual animal has a pattern of tail rings as unique as human fingerprints. A mane of coarse fur is often discernible on the lower neck and shoulders, particularly in young animals.
Found on dry, open savannahs and in areas of bush and scrub, where they hunt by sight throughout the day. They will often seek an elevated position, on a fallen tree, termite mound or rocky outcrop, when looking for prey. They will stalk as close as possible before attacking with a final burst of speed of up to 100km/h. This burst of speed can only be maintained for about 500m. Whilst running at full speed the Cheetah will trip its prey and seize it quickly by the throat in a suffocating grip. Having secured a kill they will attempt to drag the carcass into cover to avoid the attention of scavenging hyenas and Lions. They prey mainly on small to medium sized antelope, particularly Thomson's Gazelles, but will readily take hares and savannah birds. Cheetahs' can live a solitary existence as well as in pairs or small family parties.
Black & White Colobus
This large black and white monkey is represented in East Africa by two distinct species, the Eastern and the Western. In both species the overall body colour is black, the differences between the two shows in their distribution and in the extend of white body fur. The Eastern Colobus has a black face surrounded by short white fur, has long, flowing white fur extending from the shoulders along the length of the body to the rump and along black tail with abushy white tip. The Western Colobus has a black face surrounded by long white fur with flowing white fur on the shoulders only and along thin all white tail. It is worth noting that the extend of white fur on the body in both species is subject to considerable regional variation. Newborn animals are all white with pink faces.
The Eastern Colobus is found in Northern Tanzania, Central and Western Kenya and Uganda. The Western Colobus is found mainly in coastal regions of Kenya and Tanzania and in south-western Uganda. They inhabit dense mountain and coastal forests, acacia woodlands and wooded savannahs. They feed mainly on fresh leaves, fruits, bark, seedpods and some insects. They are active throughout the day but will usually rest up during the hottest, midday period. They spend very little time on the ground, usually making their way through the forests by leaping from tree to tree. They live in troops of 3-12 consisting of a dominant male with several females and offspring.
REPTILES
Nile Monitor.A large lizard measuring up to 2m in length and found throughout sub Saharan Africa along riverbanks,in marshes, or in other wet habitats. They are olive green in colour speckled with small spots of yellow. They are extremely good climbers and swimmers and will prey on a wide variety of small creatures, including fish, small birds and mammals as well as other reptiles and amphibians. They are very partial to crocodile eggs and will regularly take carrion.
Jackson's Chameleon
Unmistakable among chameleons of the region, having an ornamental armoured head with a forward facing central horn emanating from the nasal area and two further horns growing from the outer forehead. These horns are used by the males in territorial disputes and during the breeding season. The horns are less well developed or even absent in females. As with all chameleons the tail is prehensile and can be coiled around branches and used as an extra limb and they have zygodactylous toes, a special adaptation for an arboreal existence, that grip branches and twigs with a claw action for extra stability. They are generally solitary in habits with each male maintaining a territory. Unlike many chameleons which lay eggs, the Jackson's Chameleon gives birth to live young after a gestation period of between 6 to 9 months. At birth the young are light brown in colour, changing to the more usual adult green at about 4 months old. Adults grow to around 30cm in length and in spite of their rather fearsome looks they are perfectly harmless, although they may bite if molested.
AMPHIBIANS
Square Marked Toad
The common toad of the region they can often be heard issuing their monotonous croaks throughout the night.A species found in moist savannah areas and in the vicinity of human settlements. Arather plain looking toad with a grayish brown body colour and irregular square blotches of darker brown. A medium sized toad of around 6-9cm in length.
Insects
Though they are many but we will describe the African Land Snail, a very large snail, with average shell length of around 10cm, but specimens with 20cm shells have been recorded. They are hermaphrodites (i.e. they are both male and female), this does not mean that they can mate with themselves-they still require a partner. However, one single mating is all is needed for the production of a number of batches of eggs, which can be laid over a period of months. Eggs are laid in batches of 100-400, are spherical and measure on average 5mm in diameter. Under favorable conditions they will hatch within 1-3 months. Newly emerged snail's measure only 4m, but they grow rapidly and reach maturity after 6-9 months, depending on food availability and climatic conditions. They eat all manner of vegetation.
Trees & Flowers
There are many species but we will describe the Coconut Palm and Jacaranda as follows,
Coconut Palm
Some mystery still surrounds the original home of this species, but it is assumed by many to have drifted on ocean from South America to colonize the African shores. Growing to a height of around 30m,the slender trunk is usually swollen at the base and is crowned with 20-30 pinnacle leaves reaching up to 6m in length. Restricted in distribution to coastal regions the Coconut Palm is extremely salt tolerant and can live for up to 100 years, producing 50-80 fruits each year. The fruiting nut provides a valuable source of food and drink in some areas as well as the outer husk fibres providing material for rope making, matting and house thatching.
Jacaranda
An original native of Brazil this tree can now be found in parks, gardens and city centre avenues over much of the region. They grow to a height of 10m or more and have fine fern-like leaves which they shed during the dry season. The flower after the short rains blossoming into a mass of delicate bell-shaped violet blue flowers, which grow in clusters.
