Cajón del Maipo

Take a side trip from Santiago's busy streets, into the foothills of the Andes. Cajón del Maipo is less than an hour from Santiago, which is why many of the city's residents exchange the city smog for a relaxing mountain setting. The Maipo River, verdant forest slopes, and towering mountains, make this an ideal spot to getaway. The area has the unique vibe of a huaso (a cowboy from the Central valley) mixed with an artist were to breed. The small-town charm and rugged beauty are appealing but the highlight of this area is El Morado National Park.

The park offers opportunities for day hiking, rafting, horseback riding, climbing, and more. The commercially rafted section of the Maipo is a South American classic. Skiing in Centro de Ski Lagunillas is another option during the winter, and is surprisingly affordable. For those seeking less strenuous activities, the area is perfect for a hearty picnic, a leisurely stroll, or even a nap in one of the charming hotels that line the valley.

The well-paved road follows the Maipo River through the valley, past vendors selling fresh bread, honey, kuchen, empanadas, chica, and chocolate. Pass through the tiny hamlets of Vertientes and San José de Maipo, or stay to swim in the nearby clay-pool hot springs. Founded in 1792 when silver was discovered, Colonial adobe homes and an 18th-century church still stand in the town's plaza.

To get there take a bus from estación de Metro Bellavista la Florida (línea 5) in Santiago. From there, take the Metrobus 72 towards Plaza de Armas de San José de Maipo. Another feasible option is renting a car for a few days, which should only cost about $120 for a weekend trip. Keep in mind that weekends are busy with day-trippers. If possible, visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds in the hot springs and the traffic on the way back.
