Simple Tree Removal Hints, Tips & Ideas

Removing unwanted trees from your property is an expensive and risky proposition for the amateur arborist.
Bigger trees can get in the way, especially their root systems or even worse, become diseased and then become dangerous. Successful tree removal requires preparation but if the tree must go, these simple tips will make the job easier and safer.
Safety Arrangements
A large tree in an uncontrolled fall is dangerous. If it falls on people or property, disaster can result, so the following safety measures must be used:
If there are power lines around the tree, or within falling distance, contact the utility company first.
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) i.e. gloves, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, safety boots, hard hat and eye protection.
You must have sound equipment suitable for the task. A hand saw will fell a small tree - a larger one will need a chainsaw.
If you've never used a chainsaw before, then make sure you get shown how to use it by a professional first. After all, you wouldn't want to chop your leg off, would you.
Check for obstacles like fences, gardens, letterboxes, cars etc.
Check the tree for safety hazards like dead or dangling branches. If it's rotten inside, have it removed by professionals.
Plan your escape route should the tree fall away from the direction expected.
Allow yourself plenty of time. Accidents happen when you haven't planned and prepared, and are rushing to finish the job
Consult your Neighbours
Discuss the tree removal with your neighbours, especially if the tree is on a property line, or it provides welcome shade to your neighbour's yard or garden.
At this stage just by keeping the lines of communication open you can prevent days, weeks or even months of arguing.
Size up the Tree
For a do-it-yourself project, the tree should be no more than 25cm (10 inches) in diameter and no more than 600cm (20 feet) in height. Larger tree removal needs a professional arborist with mechanical equipment and specialist gear.
Essential Next Steps
1.Cut a v-shaped notch (the undercut) at a 90 degree angle in the side of the tree in the direction it will fall. Cut a quarter of the way through the tree.
2.Make a backcut on the opposite side of the tree, about 5cm (2 inches) higher than the undercut. This will help reduce the amount of pressure on the back of the tree which will enable it to fall over. This backcut should never be lower than the undercut.
3.As the fall begins, follow your escape route away from the base. A falling tree can bounce backwards over the stump.
4.When the tree is laying on the ground then it's time to remove the branches. The best way to do this is start at the bottom and work your way up.
If this seems too difficult, hire a professional arborist. They have the equipment, experience, insurance and permits. More importantly, they will get rid of any debris and do a total clean up in just minutes while you sit back, relax and watch your favorite movie.
