Postal Stamps From the Beginning
When you send a piece of mail, you have to attach postal stamps to show that you have paid the appropriate amount of postage for the size and weight of the envelope or package. The first such stamps to be used in the world were in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They were introduced to the postal system on May 1, 1840. Prior to this introduction it was the recipient of the mail that had to pay the postage when they received it. This made it easier to send mail when it was paid for by the sender and was a way of making sure that all mail was delivered.
The first stamp used for postage was called the Penny Black and the second one that went into service was the Two Pence Blue. Both of these stamps displayed a picture of Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch at the time. These first stamps were not perforated and had to be cut apart. They had to be affixed to the mail with glue because they did not contain the same type of backing as the stamps of today do. Since the UK was the only country in the world to use stamps, there was no need to have the name of the country printed on the stamps. This practice remains in force today with the United Kingdom being the only country in the world that does not have a country name on its postage stamps.
Quite after this introduction, other countries of the world began instituting the same type of practice for their postal services. The Canton of Zurich was the next stamp to be introduced. Unlike the British system of allowing the Penny Black to be sufficient postage for mail anywhere within the United Kingdom, in Zurich the cost of mail depended on the distance it had to travel. It was cheaper to send mail of the same size to a nearer community than one farther away, even though both locations were in the same country.
The first official postage stamps were introduced in the United States in 1847. Prior to this date, there were some postmasters who did have their own postage stamps to show that the postage had already been paid. The first US stamps were in denominations of five and ten cents and depicted portraits of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
Throughout the century and a half since the first stamp was used, there have been many different stamp designs. Not all are square or rectangular in shape and many are collectors?items because of mistakes that have been made in the printing process. The first self-adhesive stamps in the world were those of Sierra Leone and the Congo. These stamps were in the shape of fruit. The stamp of Bhutan contains a disc that plays the national anthem of the country.
Depending on the type of mail you send, there are different types of stamps for you to use. Sending mail by air requires an airmail stamp and if you want to get the mail to its destination within a few days, express mail stamps will help you do this. These are more expensive than the stamps for everyday use.

A Penny Parcel $19.95 "In the year 1910, Luke Tanner, an upstanding social icon in the quiet but politically powerful town of Galesburg, Vermont, adopts Ashley, an abused orphan girl. Because the cost of processing the paperwork is a single cent, orphans like Ashley are called "penny parcels," seen by society as only worth that much. But Ashley doesn't want a daddy, she would prefer to remain in the security of the orphanage, where her past can remain secret. Luke's wife, Grace, and their son, Wesley, try to love Ashley and help her break through the emotional walls around her bruised and broken heart. But her inability to live up to Luke Tanner's standard of performance, as well as her tainted perception of family dynamics, isolate Ashley from those who care about her the most. With both of them waging war on their own personal battlefields, Luke and Ashley collide. Their conflicts initiate a sovereign tragedy." |

A Penny Urned $7.99 Pickled...Then Potted All that remains of Lula Mae Wiggins-who drowned in a bathtub of cheap champagne on New Year's Eve-now sits in an alleged Etruscan urn in Savannah, Georgia. Further north, at the Den of Antiquity antique shop in Charlotte, North Carolina, plucky proprietor Abigail Timberlake is astonished to learn that she is the sole inheitor of the Wiggins estate. Late Aunt Lula Mae was, after all, as distant a relative as kin can get. Arriving in picturesque Savannah, Abby makes a couple of startling discoveries. First, that Lula Mae's final resting pot is more American cheap than Italian antique. And second, that there was a very valuable 1793 one-cent piece taped to the inside lid. Perhaps a coin collection worth millions is hidden among the deceased's worldly possessions-making Lula's passoing more suspicious than orginally surmised. With the strange appearance of a voodoo preistess coupled with the disturbing disappearance of a loved one-and with nasty family skeletons tumbling from the trees like acorns-Abby needs to find her penny auntie's killer p.d.q...or she'll be up to her ashes in serious trouble! |

The Quest for the Penny Black $9.99 A comedy adventure set in London in 1974. It is a story of a journey by a number of Londoners who, with the help of clues discovered by an elderly eccentric widow of an eminent archaeologist which were contained in the diaries of a dishonest Equerry to Queen Victoria that hinted of some stolen penny black stamps hidden around London, commence on a treasure hunt. The clues, as deciphered progressively by the lady, take her and a dysfunctional ex-merchant seaman lodger, plus a group of people, whom she thinks are private detectives, but are actually small time gangsters, to the icons of London, including Tower Bridge, Hampstead Hospital, Albert bridge, Highgate cemetery and some churches, to mention a few The search is hampered by the arrival of a big time gangster whose interest in the matter is apparent. His efforts, however, are somewhat thwarted by the arrival of some mysterious minders, engaged by a man who owns much of Notting Hill and is a friend of the old lady. It is a story of discovery and self-redemption, which lead to the ultimate conclusion. |
