Should You Choose Black Or White Socks?

Strange as it may seem, answer to the question of when to wear black socks, and when to wear white socks, is one of which many men are unsure. Which may be why so many men rely on a woman in their life to buy and choose their socks for them (and, of course, often, their underwear too). If you don't have a handy woman to do your sock shopping/selection (or if you do, and you don't want to admit to her that you don't know how to choose your own socks), read on!

 

There are, of course, some obvious rules; when wearing an all black outfit, white socks are a complete no-no! Black socks are the ONLY choice if everything else you are wearing is black. But what if your outfit is a mixture of black and white—say, a black suit with a white shirt? Or a white suit with a black tie and shoes? The answer is simple—match the socks to the color of your shoes. Black socks, black shoes, white socks white shoes. Simple. No argument. How about a gray suit, then? In the rare situation where you are wearing white shoes with a gray suit (no, I can't think of one either!), you could legitimately argue that white socks are more appropriate. But, really, white shoes with a gray suit? Much better to choose black shoes—and, therefore, black socks, or gray shoes, in which case you can happily wear gray socks.

 

Now we come to the complicated part—clothes in colors other than black, white, or gray. Generally, dark colored clothes warrant black shoes, and therefore black socks, and pale colored clothes white shoes and white socks. If you have colored shoes, you can either wear socks of a matching color (if your wardrobe is really color coordinated!) but be sure the colors are identical. Your socks could be a shade lighter or darker than your shoes but the color itself must match. You should never, for example, wear grass green shoes with moss green socks! The latter, by the way, is another situation in which gray socks may be perfectly acceptable.

 

Sport shoes, or trainers, can also prove tricky. Clearly, white trainers with a white sports kit require white socks. You could wear black socks if the rest of your sports kit is black, but your safest option is usually to apply the matching shoes, matching socks rule every time. Or, if you are a little more adventurous, how about black and white striped socks? Might get you noticed, if that's what you're after!

 

To summarize then, the rules are generally pretty simple. Black or dark colored shoes, black socks. White or light colored shoes, white socks. Colored shoes, either match colors very carefully, or go with the above rule. There you are, then. Sock etiquette sorted. No sweat! But if you ever find a situation the above rules don't seem to cover, never fear. Just find the nearest female shopper and ask her opinion. She'll be flattered to help—and, you never know, you may make a new friend!
