A Star is Born
The founder of the Gucci fashion house, named Guccio Gucci, was born in 1881 in Florence, Italy; the son of an Italian merchant. In 1906 he created a small family business selling leather saddles and bags. His reputation grew as hired top-quality craftsmen to work with him. In 1921 he expanded his trade and founded the Gucci company, which continued to grow. 1938 saw the opening of a boutique in Rome, and in 1947 he introduced the trademark bamboo handled handbag.
Other designs harkened back to his saddle-making days; a particular stripped webbing based off of a saddle girth, and even a design for suede shoes, inspired by a metal horse-bit.
