The Origin of Brand Name “Air Jordan”
In 1984, when Jordan first became a professional player, the beginning of sports shoes advertising was optimistic. It is said that in the early 80s only "sky-hook" Abdul-Jabbar whose athletic shoes contract reached a six-digit, the money that he earned was 100 thousand US dollars, Larry; Bird and the "Magic" Johnson was about 70 thousand dollars per year. The emergence of Michael Jordan has all of these changed.
At the very beginning, he didn’t want to sign with Nike because he preferred Adidas.However, Nike believed that Jordan could be their best choice. After much planning, the Nike Company presented a special and precious gift to Jordan and his parents. This generous gift is a small-cap exquisitely film. The whole film is a song which is named “Jump”. With the song, Jordan’s graceful posture movements in the basketball court was produced as a beautiful picture, it was really amazing. This excellent MTV made Jordan realized how exciting and influencing of his performance. He deeply moved by himself at the first time. Jordan’s parents recalled that Michael Jordan is very excited, after watching this MTV he decided to sign a contract with Nike immediately. But the agent said that there were some details needed to deal with the company, of which a most important issue is how to name this new pair of shoes, Nike knew that if these pairs of shoes were simply named "Michael Jordan", they may have little effect.
Nike's vice president Robert and Michael Jordan's agent Falk were good friends. One afternoon, they sat in Falk's office gossip. Robert accidentally said the word "air”. Falk’s eyes brightened, he suddenly thought of using " Air jordan ” to name after Nike’s new products. Because the "air" not only reflected production techniques and styles of this new pair of shoes, but also could reflect the individual style of Jordan’s playing. In fact, Falk’s inspiration not only named a good name of the shoes, but also inadvertently took a very visual nickname for Michael Jordan. Since then, like "Magic Johnson", “air Jordan” has also become representative of Jordan.
